The D&AD Xchange programme provides a unique opportunity for the heads of the UK’s top creative educational institutions and courses to mix and meet with some of the world’s leading design practitioners — with two days of talks, case study presentations and lively debate, presenting a broad range of respected creative views and opinions. D&AD’s brief? To create a campaign theme and signature graphic to promote the D&AD Xchange programme event — supported by posters, on-line graphics along with promotional literature, event graphics and ticketing. Our solution, the D&AD Mix Creatively campaign, taking the iconic D&AD mark and making it quite literally ooze with creative thinking, bringing to life all that creative talent mixing together with a painterly approach. For up-and-coming jewellers, The Goldsmiths’ Company’s annual New Designers exhibition is a fantastic opportunity to showcase their talents. With a very tight turn-around time, we were asked to create a simple yet elegant “welcome” stand to introduce the new designers, and direct visitors to each individual jeweller’s exhibit. We were rather pleased with the outcome, particularly the dot-screen frames, which looked convincingly three-dimensional, while also giving visual coherence to a disparate collection of supplied images. By Dana Robertson Creative Director and Founder of Neon. Butler & Parker Companion Drivers A Safe Pair of Hands brand mark on car door pick up door open by Neon. Making driving more companionable. Nothing we enjoy more than a start-up with a really fresh new business idea. And this one really seemed to have lot of mileage: the team behind it were planning to launch a “companion driver” service - i.e. just call for a smart liveried car, driven by a friendly fully vetted individual, who will be happy to accompany you and help as necessary, wherever you want to go. The main target audience for the service was affluent older people, who might appreciate being driven to, say, a doctor’s appointment or on a shopping trip, by someone entirely trustworthy and very personable. But the client team also believed that, over time, many other potential users would discover the benefits of the service. First, we needed a name for the new brand. And we set off in search of something that would give the service a dependable and established air. After exploring a good few alternatives, we came up with Butler & Parker: a little bit Downton, a little bit Thunderbirds - and a whole lot upscale and reassuring. From the name, emerged the rather elegant logo graphic: two gloves - a butler’s glove and a chauffeur’s - forming a pair of wings intended to signify the freedom enjoyed by users of the service. And then we went to work on the identity, mostly using understated black and white, to give a discreetly smart but unshowy feel to communications and also the cars themselves, but chucking in a little splash of pink, to keep things interesting. As well as all the stuff you might expect us to have done, like applying the identity to the website and stationery, we also helped the client prepare presentations articulating the potential of the new brand to banks and other potential investors. And, gratifyingly, the feedback we received suggested that the strength and confidence of our work played an important part in helping the Butler & Parker, Companion Drivers secure the funding it was looking for… Idea, art direction and design by Neon Design & Branding Consultancy www.neon-creative.com

10 years of the London Eye

We were briefed by a new start-up venture offering high end educational yoga classes for mothers and babies, and mothers-to-be. They asked us to name the new company and create a brand identity and visual language that would cut through the blandly generic mother-and-baby photography currently saturating the market. They wanted to communicate that this wasn’t “just another yoga class”, but an offering with childbirth education at its heart – through classes designed to support a mother, her baby and her partner, through pregnancy and beyond into labour, birth and postnatal recovery. But, at the same time, the company founders were keen to convey that yoga and learning can and should be fun. The Royal Mail celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first flight of Concorde pack (in partnership with the Royal Mint) researched and written by Neon, was designed to capture and bring to life some of the more notable facts and events of the design and development of this extraordinary aircraft. The envelope features an image of the first UK fight of Concorde, with the inner showcasing the build of one of the very first aircraft. This was supported by a snapshot photographic timeline of Concorde's development and operational life and highlights of it incredible abilities and unique design features. Kantar Worldpanel’s Entertainment division briefed us to create a promotional campaign that would communicate a complex offer to the film production and film distribution industries. As the platforms used by audiences to access films continue to change and multiply, it’s increasingly important for the industry to keep on top of consumers’ attitudes and behaviour. Worldpanel can track the entire release cycle of every new film, and the platforms it is watched on — from cinema, VoD, or set-top box to Blu-ray and DVD — enabling film producers and distributors to increase their profits through better platform and promotional targeting. Conceived within the existing Worldpanel corporate style, our solution was a print and online ad campaign based on witty juxtapositions of famous film titles with the names of all the latest viewing platforms... The Royal Mail London 1908 Olympic Games commemorative sheet was produced to mark the centenary of the IV Olympiad held at the White City Stadium in London. It was researched and designed by Neon to capture and bring to life some of the more notable facts and events of the London 1908 Olympic Games. It includes insights into sequence of events that lead to London hosting the 1908 Olympic Games and the construction of the White City Stadium, the birth of the modern marathon distance, introduces some of the notable figures and athletes of the time including Baron Pierre de Coubertin and a comprehensive medal table from the Games. London 1908 Olympic Games

Like a lot of our projects, this came to us via an existing client relationship - when our old friends at The Goldsmiths' Company recommended Neon to their counterparts at The Gemmological Association of Great Britain (also known as Gem-A). When we met them, Gem-A's communications were short of coherence, and lacked the kind of authoritative feel that would reflect their standing as a trade body with an important industry leadership role to play. We were happy to supply both, across a range of advertising and literature, along with a much needed bit of creative sparkle - demonstrated, for example, by those nice little jeweller's loupes standing in for quotation marks. Countdown to the 2012 London Olympics series

A traditional Christmas lunch table gift of the years Royal Mail Christmas stamps set for the Royal Mails Stamp Advisory Committee – formed of some of the most notable names within the design industry of the past 30 years. Neon's idea was to present the years Christmas stamps within a 2D printed cracker, tied together with a festive red ribbon – which then pulled apart to reveal the stamps placed within plate sunk debossed frames. Leeds based DJ pairing and event organisers Morning Hormones wanted to bring something different to a music scene full of the Ministry of Sound style overly slick graphics. They required something that represented their more irreverent style and personality. The Morning Hormones identity & posters were the fronted by two new characters illustrated Nick Deakin. Their alter egos soon became much loved and sought after, helping bring the Morning Hormones to the attention of both record labels and promoters. Amanda Patton garden designs have been recognized through many awards (Chelsea Flower Show Gold, RHS Gold) and she is a regular guest broadcaster on BBC radio. Amanda approached Neon (on recommendation) to create a new brand identity for her publications, stationery and portfolio — after realising that she needed a brand identity that reflected some of the themes and values she held as a designer of gardens. Amanda believed that “good design is not just about getting the proportions right, it’s also about getting the communication right, with a common theme of quality and craftsmanship. Glorious United Kingdom Smiler sheet

Thames & Hudson on-going relationship with Neon lead to the commissioning of a Thames & Hudson share certificate and supporting explanatory literature. The brief was to capture all the nessecary legal information including their brand mark and in true Thames & Hudson style also 'be a thing of beauty and proud to own'. The new double sided share certificate combined the T&H dolphins with a rosette style 'splash' rendered in a classic bank note engraving style. At 420mm long and 210mm deep and printed on a pure white luxurious 300gsm paper the new share certificate had a premium feel, making a keep sake in its own right beyond that of number of shares the certificate would come to represent. The share certificate was accompanied by a simple A5 explanation guide, printed on the same luxurious stock, which used the wave line style from the share certificate at the bottom of each page, along which the dolphins playfully leapt from left to right across the page as you progressed through the booklet. – Idea, art direction and design by Neon Design & Branding Consultancy www.neon-creative.com
