Creative director of Neon Dana Robertson at Norwich University of the Arts Big book crit event in 2026 reviewing a 3rd years student portfolios

Portfolio reviews of 3rd year students at Norwich University of the Arts Big Book Crit.

A big thank you to Norwich University of the Arts and DMA Talent for inviting me to take part in this year’s Big Book Crit.

It was a real pleasure to return to Norwich (my old art school) to review final-year portfolios across graphic design, editorial design, illustration and photography, offering feedback on both creative work and how students present themselves as they prepare to enter the creative industries.

As an award-winning brand and campaign designer with more than 30 years’ experience creating work for global brands, charities and cultural organisations through my studio, Neon, it’s always rewarding to spend time with emerging creative talent and share some of the lessons I’ve learned throughout my career.

There was some genuinely impressive work on display. What stood out most was the quality of thinking behind the projects, the enthusiasm of the students, and their willingness to challenge conventions and explore new ideas. Seeing that level of creativity and ambition was a reminder that the future of the UK’s design and creative sector is in very capable hands.

Opportunities such as the Big Book Crit are invaluable. They help bridge the gap between education and industry, giving students access to professional insight while allowing those of us working in branding, graphic design and creative communications to stay connected to the next generation of talent.

It was also personally satisfying to give something back to the institution that helped launch my own career in design many years ago.

Good luck to everyone with their final shows, portfolios and results.

And a special thanks to Evie Ross and Cordell Burke for making this important event happen and creating such a valuable opportunity for students.
